One of the most common file formats supported by computer video applications is the Audio Video Interleaved (AVI) file format. Most computers can recognize and play an AVI file with little set-up, but this is not the case for stand alone Digital Video Disc (DVD) players. Home DVD players require the AVI file to first be converted to an International Organization for Standardization (ISO) format before the video can be played back. AVI2DVD and Free ISO Creator software can convert AVI files to the ISO format. The ISO output from these applications can be burned as a DVD image for playback on most stand alone players.
Difficulty: EasyInstructions1Download AVI2DVD or Free ISO Creator (see Resources).
2Input the AVI file you would like to convert. In AVI2DVD, click "Load avi/ogm/mkv." Browse for the AVI file to convert and click "Open." In Free ISO Creator, click the "Add Files" button and select the AVI file to convert. Click "Open."
3Setup the conversion. In AVI2DVD, click "Step 2 Output" and select DVD for the output. Make sure to check the box next to "Make ISO," and enter the output file name in the "Name" field. In Free ISO Creator, click the "Options" tab and check the box next to "ISO9660 + Joliet UNICODE name extension," then click "OK."
4Start the conversion. In AVI2DVD, click "Add Job," followed by the "Go" button. In Free ISO Creator, click the "Save ISO as" button, and navigate to the desired output directory. Name the ISO file, and click "OK."
5Burn the ISO to a blank DVD-R using Windows 7 built-in image recording utility. Double-click the converted ISO file, and the image recording utility will automatically open. Insert a blank DVD-R into your DVD-R/W drive, select the correct DVD-R/W drive from the drop-down box in the image recording utility and click "Burn."
