AVI is a multimedia container that is used to publish and distribute digital video files. The audio and moving image (video) streams that are contained in an AVI file can be digitized with a variety of codecs. A codec is a combination of the words "coder" and "decoder" and it refers to any utility that is used to compress digital information. Users can modify an AVI file's codecs by creating a version of the video that is encoded with different types of audio and video streams. MPEG Streamclip, iWisoft Free Video Converter and Aura Video Converter are all free video conversion programs that make this type of encoding possible.
