The Windows operating system has a built-in feature that stores mailbox information automatically on an Exchange server. You use this backup utility to restore one or several mailboxes after you accidentally delete a user's inbox. The "ntbackup" utility is included with Windows 2000, 2003 and 2008 server operating systems, and it handles all versions of Exchange server mailboxes. This utility is a convenient way to restore deleted mailboxes without purchasing expensive third-party software.
Difficulty: ModerateInstructions1Click the Windows server "Start" button that hosts your Exchange server. Type "ntbackup" into the text box on the menu and press "Enter." This opens your backup utility.
2Click "Advanced Mode" in the opened wizard welcome window. This opens your main utility console where you can manually back up data or restore it.
3Click the "Restore and Managed Media" tab. This opens a view with a list of files backed up on the server. The backups are stored in directories that are named with the associated program.
4Click your Exchange server name to expand a list of options. Click "Mailbox Store." From this selection, choose to restore the entire database with all user mailboxes, or choose only one mailbox to restore.
5Click "Start Restore" to copy the inbox information from your backup to the main Exchange server database.
