Service Pack 3 (SP3) is a collection of updates and enhancements for your Windows XP operating system. However, SP3 is known for its issues that arise during and after installation. You may see an error message notifying you that the installation has failed. Using a few troubleshooting methods, you can resolve this issue.
Difficulty: EasyInstructions1Reinstall SP3. Close any open programs or files. Restart you computer. Navigate to the "Start" menu and select "All Programs." Click "Windows Update." Select the "Express Install" option and then "Install." Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation.
2Temporarily disable all third-party anti-malware and firewall programs. Right-click the respective icons in the notification area on your taskbar and select "Exit" or "Disable" (depending on the program). Third-party security programs tend to block a successful installation of SP3. Make sure to enable the appropriate programs once you have successfully installed SP3.
3Download Windows XP SP3 from the Microsoft Download Center (see Resources). Click the "Download" link and follow on-screen guided prompts to complete the installation.
